What?  Why? How? When? Who? … I ask – ‘What are some top-rating guiding principles that create ‘Leadership Ideas For Great Business Goal Setting’!

Here is a mix of ideas to set up the best goal-setting – from six outstanding leaders. This is a compelling mix of ideas from a philosophical, wisdom-based, and action-oriented set of beliefs and theories.

We are moving through the 2021 year; Covid19 is still with us and likely will be for some time yet?

If ever there was a perfect time for each of us to ‘create a new world’, it is now? Let`s start with this question…

‘How happy, how calm, how content are you?’  How content and fulfilled is your staff, your community, your family? How well are they managing themselves, in their work and in their day-to-day living in this Covid19 threatening world? 

 

Lets set up a focus around ‘happiness’, it seems to me, this is a perfect starting point to reflect and restate goals and ambitions!

 

Some years back I was lucky enough to attend a 4-day conference in Sydney, titled ‘Happiness And Its Causes’.  Some participants thought the title of the conference to be somewhat strange; yet the presentations and content from world leaders in their field, over those days, was simply brilliant!

Seems to me this title, ‘Happiness And It`s Causes’ is a headline management keyword and focus so perfectly relevant for today?

 

I propose that leaders have an extra responsibility in these Covid19 days, to monitor and manage people differently and better and have a specific focus on stress, anxiety, wellbeing, and … to create measures of happiness.

Leaders need to construct new policies and strategies… let`s stand back, let`s have new eyes and a new and enhanced perspective about happiness!

  • Ask about contentment!
  • Ask about ability in managing stress and anxiety!
  • Make more time to monitor overall wellbeing both incidentally and structured.

I believe in the development of new extra skills and enhancement of existing management skills. These need to be loaded into everyones` leadership briefcase… ie greater and different structures – build in a reflection of existing goals and strategies, and those hugely important people management strategies.  

Now there is so much more to consider.

It`s about all of these things…

Don`t Make The Same Mistakes I`ve Made, Time For A Review https://smallbusinesschronicles.com/dont-make-the-same-mistakes-ive-made-time-for-a-review/ Sun, 14 Jan 2018 20:39:15 +0000 http://smallbusinesschronicles.com/?p=1699 Time for a review!  Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you`re mostly treading water? – not going forward and perhaps even going backwards?  Asking yourself questions like – where is my life and my business going?  Why? Why? Why? 

I titled this article quite purposely -“Don`t Make The Same Mistakes I`ve Made, Time For A Review”.

 

So what`s this all about?

I have been worried for some time about my business, and about my finances. Not growing as I quite want. I needed some quiet contemplation and to forensically examine my business.  After agonising thinking and checking out advice from online mentors to get perspective; I asked myself the following very specific questions.

  1. Why am I doing what I`m doing in my business?
  2. How am I going about it?
  3. What exactly am I doing -what`s working, what`s not working?
  4. What do I need to change?
  5. What value am I providing to others?
  6. What do I do next?
  7. Why am I waiting around for others?
  8. Why do I feel like I have little or no control?

 

And the big question – the very big question for me and for everyone I expect is –

“Am I feeling really passionate about what I`m doing? Have I lost that passion?”  

How`s your passion?

 

 

I recorded everything, all the answers to the above questions – I needed to make them organic, not mind based. I organised them into a simple PMI (Plus, Minus, Interesting). This clarified just about everything. It gave me further think time, then……

 

But first just a little bit about me… just how did I get to where I am today? (short version).. 

I`ve lived hard, I`ve played hard and with passion. 

I have been and still have a career as an educator, teacher, Principal (some years back). I still teach 7 to 13 year olds part time in a local primary school.

I`ve been in business for about 10 years, I`m a learner and a consumer of knowledge. I guess that`s part of me being a teacher. I`ve worked as a Coach.

I`ve been in affiliate marketing and network marketing. And as I said, consumed lots of courses to solve my problems.

I needed to find the answers to all the questions I had, the better way, the best way.

I clearly understand that I`m a long term sufferer of ‘not knowing what I didn’t know in business’. It`s almost like a drug, an addiction!

I have been a buyer of far too many shiny objects – I suffer from “shiny object syndrome” -not sure if that`s a recognised disease or not – but it`s a marketers nightmare!

 

Commitments from my review exercise.

  1. I will not buy, promote or sell any shiny objects.
  2. I will unsubscribe from ‘those’ mailing lists!
  3. I will delete people from my mailing lists who practice me first-money first people.
  4. I have enough knowledge, I will activate and share it. 

 

In my business –

  • I will be very guarded about which products and services I promote.
  • My promotions must assist my clients and customers to gain in knowledge.
  • Our business status, finances and welfare must be enhanced.
  • The promotions must be aligned to ‘people connectedness’.
  • The promotions must assist businesses to be unique and to stand out.

Making time for a review should be scheduled on your calendar … regularly.  The review ought to be seen as essential, as a very positive exercise. 

The review needs to be done with ‘eyes wide open and not with eyes wide shut’

Do we need an evolution of  how we have personally constructed our mind?  Likely we do; so exercising the grey matter is a perfect way to go!

As an educator, I contend we need a major overhaul of elements of ‘our education system’? Should we insist on a teaching pedagogy of mind matters, of creativity and of entrepreneurial spirit or should we get back to the basics, or both? There seems great energy about now to re-engineer our priorities. Mindset does matter.  Let`s teach about it, as a top priority?

What do you say about building future societies?

Which path should our society follow? What are the real pillars of a ‘more conscious’ society?  Is our society careless about teaching thinking skills and careless about teaching the skills of deep questioning?

So what about today`s adults?

A focus on mind matters plus more options for wealth building and financial independence …. will likely lead to building a new and better future. What do you think?

Building financial wealth for the us requires a systematic purposeful action; products and services which enhance and enable wealth creation and which in turn can enable lifestyle quality to grow.

I wonder what difference there would have been in my life`s journey had I understood the true meaning of financial independence?  Would my now-life circumstances have been very different? How much was I de-powered because of the lack of knowledge?

My education was typical of most baby boomers.  I grew up in a very small country town, both parents worked and sport was the basis of life, summer and winter through! I travelled 60 kilometres daily for 7 years from Reynella (South Australia) to Adelaide to complete my secondary and tertiary education. (great choice by my parents!).

But, while my education was standard for the times – academic and exacting, it lacked any mention of business, management and entrepreneurship -and finances.  The mindset of those times was one more related to generations/people recovering from wars and recession; about survival and betterment; about the a concept of having more – to escape from a life of near poverty, one of lack of choice and having-to-just-get-by!

Today, I believe we are more conscious! And there`s certainly greater opportunities for all of us.

What do you believe and feel about attention to mindset?  Do more active and creative mindsets need to prevail for the new times?

New thinking, new teaching, uniqueness and entrepreneurship in it`s widest interpretation needs to be championed!  …  But only if we truly want to have real personal choice, real opportunities, true freedom – real use of time! …  to be, to work, to serve, to travel and, and, and… abounding – choice!

The last one was the same as the one before. I have nothing in common with those people. The ‘in-group’ always dominate and they don`t seem to really want to have new people  ‘join their club’.  So when fear stops you from networking and what to do about it becomes too big an issue.

A colleague said these words to me, some 18 months ago. He was completely over networking at the local level.  He had tried different member groups. Non seemed to offer too much. The groups had been in place for some time, were settled, were comfortable with their leadership, their agenda and were not really keen to do anything different. So my mate decided it was not worth his time.

Yet, the same person relished the idea of conferences and masterminds, those big ideas bonanza events that occurred infrequently!

So what about you, are you a reluctant participant, and what do you know to do about it?

When you show up at a work event, a conference, or a networking gala, do you feel it helps your career or wastes your time? Some people are natural at working the room to make valuable contacts and deals, but many of us find crowds intimidating and talking to strangers uncomfortable. If we respond by clinging to a group of people that we already know, we miss out on most of the value of the event.

In this article I will talk about a few of the concrete tactics that have worked for me. Feel free to like and share it, and leave a comment below if you found it useful.

Introversion doesn’t matter

Many people I know don’t realize I’m somewhat introverted, and don’t believe me when I tell them. I enjoy individuals but feel shy and uncomfortable in large gatherings and social situations. But that’s okay because connecting with people in an event setting is a learned skill, and it doesn’t matter if it comes naturally or not.

I have learned to think of networking as a process to go through, with my job being to make the other people feel comfortable, and see how I can help them. Because I know the steps, I can follow them. The steps are:

  • Approach a person I don’t know and introduce myself
  • Direct the conversation to find out about the other person’s work, projects, and interests
  • Move on from the conversation after a few minutes to maximize the number of people I meet and to allow the other person to do the same

Approach

Most people feel awkward meeting new people. If you think of your role as helping others feel comfortable, people warm to that.

The people you want to approach come in 3 varieties:

  • Important people you’ve pre-identified: speakers, VIPs, etc. These people are the easiest to approach because there’s usually a reason you want to meet them. Therefore you know what you want to talk about.
  • People standing on their own.
  • People standing in groups not really talking. Often they’ll be next to each other in an open stance, looking around the room.

I find the best approach is a direct one. Everyone is there for the same reason, to meet strangers. Keep the following in mind:

  • Approach with confidence, like the confident person you are/are playing. If you walk up to a person or small group timidly, they have to make the first move. If you walk up and extend your hand and say “Hi, I’m [INSERT NAME HERE]” it makes them feel safe to respond.
  • Bright eyes, warm handshake, look them in the eye in Western countries. You may not have met the person before, but you are really happy to see them. If this doesn’t come naturally, imagine you are an actor playing the role of a confident person.

People often mirror the body language and comfort level of the person they are talking to. If you act comfortable and confident, it puts them at ease. If they are actually at ease, you will be at ease. Fake it until you make it.

There`s not too many people I meet during any given week who are not stressed, one way or another. Yes people are stressed, What is stress – Why are we stressed?

Background:

Back in the sixties and seventies, people dreamt of a time when they could kick back and relax more because modern technology was finally there to help with tiresome tasks like cleaning the house. Politicians and community leaders and the media convinced us that life was getting better. And many of us we were convinced!  People looked forward to more and more wonderful inventions that made life easier and essentially, happier.

Yes, many of us we were on the ‘happy’ bandwagon.

Fast forward to the era of the eBay, i Phones,  Playstations, Apps and hand held computers of all sorts that connects us to the Internet in a heartbeat.

We are experiencing more advanced technology than all of the previous decades combined. Thanks to globalized trade and endless technological innovations, we can now enjoy the many benefits of the Internet- 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Any ordinary laptop or PC that was assembled around the year 2012, would be at least 1,000,000 times more efficient than the computer that launched the Apollo rocket to the moon.

We are literally living the dream, Or are we?

So the question now is: why are we still stressed?  Or more importantly: why are we even more stressed than our predecessors? Are we managing?

And will we feel and think less stressed in the years to come?

Sociologists, psychologists and modern day economists have all tried to determine at which juncture our era has become completely and almost inextricably associated with stress!

The studies that tackle the “stress puzzle” are complex in their entirety. However, I have taken the liberty of summarizing some of the most important findings.

The Roots of Stress

1. Less Leisure Time – Many people often associate stress with having to deal with childcare and taking care of the household.

However, if we were to compare the amount of time that people spend taking care of their homes and families now with the amount of time spent doing the same things back in the 1910’s, we would arrive at pretty much the same average number of hours per week: 52 hours.

The reason for this is that we are now spending more time on additional activities such as shopping for the daily household goods- checking out the things we see on TV. Those must haves, at least according to the media. We are perhaps at the mercy of having to have ‘things’.

Kids want them, women want them, men want them – the neighbors have them! My friends and mates have “it”.  The stress of keeping up! Do people find these wanting activities pleasant and leisurely? Or…

So even if we have plenty of modern appliances to lessen the time needed to complete different tasks, the time that we could spend for leisure is now being consumed by additional, avoidable activities and chores.

2. Stressors Abound – In an ideal world, a person who continually feels stressed at work would be able to unwind and distress when he comes home.

There are some people who have managed to accomplish this feat. I am also certain that theses people are mostly extremely happy that they “cracked the code” and have less stressful experiences.

However, for 60% of adults, the scenario isn’t as bright and stress free. The present reality is that more than 50% of all adults in America and other countries experience the same level of stress both at home and at work.

So an ordinary working adult no longer experiences a reprieve from stress because both environments are deemed stressful. Stress is everywhere.

3. Harmful Societal Standards – It is no secret that modern society is still ruled by double standards, especially in the workplace. Competition in workplaces, bullying work environments, lack of equality, lack of appropriate leadership and culture and relationship building by managers, means many people are at risk of feeling, thinking, and behaving stressed!

Despite significant breakthroughs in the field of gender equality, many people still subscribe to the idea that a woman is less able than a man!  Why ARE men paid more than women for the same work? Why do men hold more senior positions than women? Why?

Are equal rights afforded to people of all races, religion and beliefs, disability, and sexual orientation!

These different standards are actually toxic in the workplace because it encourages aggressive competition rather than co-operation! People are not respected for their skill, abilities and talent!   Does this make the workplace a frustrating and stressful place for both males, females and all the different groups?

4. Chronic Overwork – More than 25% of all adult workers complain of not having enough time in a day to finish everything they have to do.

To compensate for the scarcity of time, many adults resort to overworking. Unpaid work hours are increasing around the world.  Does this leads to a “burn out”?  It is difficult to recover from burn out if people don`t have the skills and time to reduce stress levels. What to do?

5. Fragmentation – The present divorce rate in the United States, as an example, is a staggering 50%. This means that a significant percentage of the entire American population is comprised of single-parent families with only 1 main earner. Stressor?

This reality is forcing many single parents (mostly females) have to work twice as hard and longer hours just to keep up with the daily expenses of their families.

Obviously this situation is extremely stressful because….  leisure time is almost nonexistent!  All other free time from work, if any, is diverted to taking care of the children and the household.
